Charlie was born in Superior, Wisconsin back around 1911. His family numbered an even dozen, plus or minus a couple depending on the hour of the day or day of the week. Well, then, just as now, making a go of it in Superior was rough. You either ended up staying on the farm or working as a laborer (which meant being laid off).
But Charlie wanted music. To get Tuba lessons he became a grave digger to get the money (remember, this was while still in middle school). He certaainly learned well. In the early thirties he teamed up with Freddie Fisher and the Schnickelfritz band and then when the band split up he became a founding member of the Korn Kobblers. By the early 50s the Korn Kobblers' children were getting older and the group broke up so the guys could be with their families.
Here was Charlie, member of one of the great novelty bands, TV star (two years on CBS), even a movie with Rudy Valle to his credit. So what did he do? Of course he became an egg salesman.
Now let's admit it, egg sales just don't fit the image we have of this fellow with the big eyes and charming personality. Within the year he was part of a local band at a resteraunt. He later founded The Jokers but the travel schedule forced him o back of and return home where he went into the medical field still entertaining and helping folks get better with the help of song.
Charles daughter, Charlene, provided us with much (read all) of this information. And, she was vacinated with a phonograph needle (she'll explain when she writes up her thoughts on this page).
